The LEAN Innovation Sandpits from the University of Leicester are private online sessions delivered one-to-one with individual companies. All discussions will be covered by confidentiality agreements. The sandpits are designed to bring your leadership/management team together with University experts (e.g. advanced manufacturing, AI/Data, Space engineering, health, business) industry and innovation professionals to tackle a significant business need/opportunity for your company using action learning techniques. You will benefit, from their combined expertise and experience in a fun, friendly and fast-paced format.
The 1.5 hour, online, LEAN Innovation Sandpit sessions are open to owners, directors and managers of established businesses only. During the sandpit your business directors will join forces with our experts and specialists, using creativity and innovation, to identify new solutions and evaluate which are best to take forward. Our innovation team will work with you, before the sandpit, to identify and describe the business need/opportunity you want to focus on. The sandpit will provide you with new insights and solutions.
The LEAN Innovation Sandpit is open to established businesses that have a minimum turnover of £2m interested in growing their business through research and innovation. The participating companies will have an opportunity to access further expertise through our funded innovation programmes from life sciences to 3D printing and advanced manufacture.
The LEAN Innovation Sandpits will be delivered online by the Leicester Innovation Hub team and are part-funded by European Regional Development Fund. The Leicester Innovation Hub provides innovation and incubation support and facilities to businesses and entrepreneurs to make it easier to access the breadth of research and innovation expertise across the University of Leicester by providing dedicated practical innovation support to help companies reach business objectives.
The LEAN Innovation Sandpit is open to established businesses that have a minimum turnover of £2m, interested in growing their business through research and innovation in one of the sectors including: Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering; Science, Technology and Environment; Health; Communication, Marketing and Creative Industries; Earth Observation and Space Supply Chains.

The benefits of the ‘sandpits’ are many and varied. They bring opportunities for knowledge sharing and generating ideas. Perhaps most excitingly the events can identify areas where a business and the University can work together on a business challenge. These sessions have been organised to provide you with a forum to share some of your business needs/opportunities and challenges with some ‘great minds’. The University, in turn, will share their experiences, expertise and industry know-how. During the session, your management team will be encouraged to challenge what has gone before and how to do business by working across traditional boundaries to discover solutions in the world of emerging social, economic and political change. Using their knowledge, skills and contacts, our experts are well placed to help you grow your business through support, research and innovation.

We will meet with you before the sandpit to identify the business challenge you would like us to address.
The Sandpit will work through three high speed stages:
- Play – Use creativity to explore multiple possibilities through using expert mindsn
- Build – turn possibilities into plansn- Learn – evaluate the plans against key criteria
After the sandpit we will continue working with you to provide you with a funded business innovation project.
We will recruit a tailored team of 4-5 experts from the University of Leicester and business support community to match your chosen business need/opportunity. The experts will be a combination of innovation professionals and academics/researchers with relevant specialisms.
